Freelance product designer day rates in 2026: how to read prices and hire well
Between two freelance product designer profiles, the day rate can double. It is not always a question of talent: experience, specialty and way of working matter just as much. Here is how to read these prices, and what we look at when we put a team together.
The average daily rate (TJM in French) is the price of a freelancer's working day, excluding VAT. For a product designer or UX/UI designer, it depends first on experience, then on specialty and the context of the engagement. The figures below are orders of magnitude observed in 2026 on platforms and public day-rate surveys in France; they vary by source and region.
Observed ranges
- Junior profile (under 3 years): often between €300 and €400 a day.
- Mid-level profile (3 to 7 years): often between €400 and €550 a day.
- Senior profile (over 7 years): often between €500 and €650 a day in the Paris region, sometimes more for a rare specialty.
Published medians are around €470 to €550 a day for UX/UI designers in the Paris region. Differences between sources mostly come from who is counted: a survey that mixes juniors and seniors shows a lower median.
What pushes a day rate up or down
- Specialty. User research, design systems, data visualization and AI interfaces are rarer than pure UI, and are paid more.
- Industry. Pharma, banking, luxury: regulated or demanding environments require experience you do not find everywhere.
- Duration. A long engagement often justifies a slightly lower day rate than a two-week top-up.
- Way of working. Fully remote widens the talent pool; daily presence on site narrows it.
- Intermediaries. A platform or an IT services firm takes a commission: the price paid by the client and the day rate received by the freelancer are not the same.
Five questions to ask before signing
- Which recent project is closest to ours, and what exactly was your role?
- How do you start an engagement: who do you meet in the first week?
- Have you run user interviews or tests yourself?
- How do you work with developers at delivery time?
- What happens if you are unavailable for a few days?
The last question is often forgotten. Yet it is the main limit of a solo freelancer, and the reason why a collective can be safer on a long project.
Day rate or fixed price?
A day rate suits extra capacity in a team already in place. For a precise deliverable (a tested prototype, a design system, an audit), a fixed price is often simpler: you know the price and the expected result before you start. That is why most Kapti offers have an announced starting price.
